Régismont-le-Haut is a prehistoric site in the commune of Poilhes, in the Hérault department.
This open-air camp was inhabited, probably for a fairly short time, at the end of the Aurignacian.
The site extends over about 400 m2 and has slight depressions corresponding to ancient channels, filled by colluvium and aeolian silts that have protected the archaeological remains. He delivered clues of habitat development, rare for the Aurignacian, such as hearths or structures composed of organized limestone blocks.
The unique archaeological level is characterized by lithic remains, mainly flint or quartzite, and some blocks of dyes. Despite poor conservation of organic matter, charcoal and bone fragments, both burned and not, have been found, most often reduced to trace amounts. Among the few identifiable remains, there is a buffalo skull and some shells, most often perforated. Some shellfish indicate contact with the Mediterranean coast.
Archaeological furniture is relatively scarce and is organized around many fireplaces (27 have been identified), defining areas of activity with undoubtedly distinct vocations. The fireplaces, flat or in basins, exceptionally lined with stones, are circular and have a diameter of 50 to 80 cm.
