The cave of Bédeilhac is a vast decorated cave located on the territory of the commune of Bédeilhac-et-Aynat in Ariège. It is part of the network of decorated caves of the Pyrenean-Cantabrian chain.
Man, for at least 15,000 years, has known and frequented the prehistoric cave of Bédeilhac. This place of refuge and probable rituals for hunters of the Magdalenian period saw a succession of human groups of the Metal Age (burials of the Bronze Age), Antiquity, then the first naturalists from the sixteenth century at least.
The cave, known from time immemorial was visited and described as early as 1773 by Marcorelle.
In July 1906, a Paleolithic cave painting was discovered and authenticated by Abbot Henri Breuil, the first in the department of Ariège.
The cave is explored several times and Messrs. Cartailhac, Vidal and Mandement make discoveries. After several discoveries of paintings, engravings and clay modeling, the cave is classified as a historical monument in 1929.
